Regulation on fragrance ingredients

The European Union estimates that between 1% and 3% of the population is allergic to some fragrance materials. IFRA (International Fragrance Association) aims to protect perfume consumers and the environment. They provide recommendations for restricted or banned substances based on the evaluation of an independent research institute called RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials.

The Cosmetic Regulation n°1223/2009 lists the 26 substances eligible to cause skin sensitisation. The EU is currently in consultation with the SCCS, however, to increase this number from 26 to 82 (54 chemicals and 28 naturals).

Three allergenic potential levels may be identified: high, medium and low.

Each fragrance created on SUPERFUMISTA may potentially contain these ingredients and we take the following recommendations into account.
